Volunteers Needed at the RES Library

Image
RES Library volunteers help our scholars find books they love to read If you love books and children and you're comfortable with computers, please consider volunteering at the RES library this year! Library volunteers help our scholars find books and other materials, check materials in and out, and put them away when scholars are finished with them. Volunteers also set up book displays, read aloud with scholars, and process many of our new books. This year we are especially looking for volunteers during kindergarten and first grade library classes. More information and a schedule of time slots is available on the  library volunteer web page , or contact our librarian at beth.redford@cesuvt.org or 434-2461. Thanks very much for your interest!

Open House Week at the #RESvt Library #RESreads #CESUvt

Thank you all very much to the scholars and families who stopped by the library during our two Open House nights! It was wonderful to see everyone, and especially to meet the families of our new kindergartners for the first time. Several family members signed up for library accounts so they could check out extra books for their children -- stop by the library any time if you are interested in getting a family account.

"Reading communities have these benefits: Building relationships with other readers sustains a student's interest in reading because it reinforces that reading is an acceptable and desirable pastime...For students disinterested in reading, a reading community provides positive reinforcement and nonthreatening reading role models by forging relationships with classmates who enjoy reading more. For avid readers, classroom reading communities offer status and acceptance for their reading behaviors." -- Donalyn Miller aka The Book Whisperer, in Reading in the Wild This year at RES we will be encouraging our scholars to see themselves as part of our school and classroom communities of readers. We have started with a new Twitter and Instagram hashtag, #RESreads - take a look sometime and see what our readers are up to! We are also using the lobby display case to share photos of RES students and adults and what they are reading. We would love to have pictures of RES s

Kindergartners begin their class visits to the RES Library by exploring each section of the library in turn. Each week we visit a different section: Picture Books (E for Everybody) Early Reader (Pink Dot Books) Nonfiction Comic Books Magazines Biographies Poetry Spanish Books Each week kindergartners will be bringing home one picture book to share with their families, and one "interest book" which could be from any of the sections listed above. Don't be surprised if your child brings home a big, thick book about ancient Egypt...or crystals...or a whole Shel Silverstein poetry collection to share! I encourage you to read your kindergartner's books out loud with him or her; reading aloud to children helps build their vocabularies and models for them that reading is an important part of their lives. If you ever have any questions about your kindergartner's library books or library classes, please let me know at beth.redford@cesuvt.org or 434-2461, o

Spotlight on: Grade 3 Library Classes #RESvt #CESUvt

Third graders have been learning new skills to help them use the library independently. They are practicing how to search the library computer catalog if you know what a book is called (that's a title search), if you know who wrote the book (that's an author search) if you know what a book is about (that's a subject or a keyword search) They will be able to use these search skills in other libraries as well, and also for their third and fourth grade research projects. The most exciting part of the day was when a scholar used his new skills to look for a book about building forts. He was thrilled with the book he found, independently!
