Starting this week, fourth grade artwork will be on display in the library. Under the direction of RES art teacher Joanna Elliott, fourth grade scholars have been teaching each other how to make different types of artwork. The large mobile now hanging in the back room of the library is a project from one of these student-run lessons. Come enjoy the work of our talented scholars!

The library has added over 140 new nonfiction titles so far this year, some in the regular nonfiction collection and some in the Early Reader (pink dot) collection. These levelled nonfiction titles have been a hit with third graders doing research, as well as scholars just  looking for good books about animals, space, weather, and more.

Third graders have continued their research on organisms using World Book Online, a web-based encyclopedia that includes video clips and a readaloud feature as well as text articles. You can try World Book Online at home by visiting the RES Library website; contact your classroom teacher or Mrs. Redford first for the login and password.

And our fourth grade scholars have started creating their own video commercials in Enrichment Library classes as a way of learning more about advertising and media literacy. So far they have learned about different advertising strategies (Bandwagon, Bribery, Celebrities, Humor, and more), chosen "products" and created messages, and begun writing and practicing their commercials. We can't wait to see the finished videos!

New Picture Book Section!

 The NEW picture book section is complete!!  I'm very excited to present our new organization system for picture books.  I hope that it will make picture books more accessible to students and helpful for teachers and community members.  Picture books are already circulating more than before!! The picture books are now organized based on topic rather than author's last name.   The topics have been grouped together based on similar topics with a color code.  So a book's call number will include the color bin it will be found in to help narrow your search in the stacks.  An example is P Purple Funny.   The P stands for Picture Book.  The Purple stands for the color label/bin.  Funny is the specific bin to look in. Navigating the new library space

The library has gone through a transformation.  And as there are quite a few new folx in the building, I wanted to give a little tour of the library and share what the library has to offer to support you in your work.  Space Catalog Use our library catalog to look for the books you need.  Check to see if the book is available and then use its call number to locate it in the library.  The first part of a call number tells you what section in the library to look.  The second part tells you what shelf.  The map can help with finding what section is which.  If you would like more guidance on how to use the catalog, please let me know and I will happily teach you.  You can also reserve library books from the catalog.  Watch this video to find out how.   Resources The library offers lots of resources beyond books.  From the library website, you can access a variety of digital research tools, eBooks, and audiobooks.  Look at the different colored tabs to find what you are looking for.  I wil

Caldecott Books with Second Grade #resvt #cesuvt

Second graders at RES are in the middle of a unit on picture books that have won the Caldecott medal for best illustration. One of the requirements for a Caldecott book is that the illustrations must add meaning to the text. The scholars have been sharing Caldecott books, first with the text alone and then with both the text and illustrations.They have been asking the question, "What do the illustrations add to the text?" and discussing their observations with partners.
