Spotlight on: Kindergarten Library Classes #RESreads #RESvt #CESUvt

Kindergartners begin their class visits to the RES Library by exploring each section of the library in turn. Each week we visit a different section:

  • Picture Books (E for Everybody)
  • Early Reader (Pink Dot Books)
  • Nonfiction
  • Comic Books
  • Magazines
  • Biographies
  • Poetry
  • Spanish Books

Each week kindergartners will be bringing home one picture book to share with their families, and one "interest book" which could be from any of the sections listed above. Don't be surprised if your child brings home a big, thick book about ancient Egypt...or crystals...or a whole Shel Silverstein poetry collection to share! I encourage you to read your kindergartner's books out loud with him or her; reading aloud to children helps build their vocabularies and models for them that reading is an important part of their lives. New Picture Book Section!

 The NEW picture book section is complete!!  I'm very excited to present our new organization system for picture books.  I hope that it will make picture books more accessible to students and helpful for teachers and community members.  Picture books are already circulating more than before!! The picture books are now organized based on topic rather than author's last name.   The topics have been grouped together based on similar topics with a color code.  So a book's call number will include the color bin it will be found in to help narrow your search in the stacks.  An example is P Purple Funny.   The P stands for Picture Book.  The Purple stands for the color label/bin.  Funny is the specific bin to look in. Caldecott Books with Second Grade #resvt #cesuvt

Second graders at RES are in the middle of a unit on picture books that have won the Caldecott medal for best illustration. One of the requirements for a Caldecott book is that the illustrations must add meaning to the text. The scholars have been sharing Caldecott books, first with the text alone and then with both the text and illustrations.They have been asking the question, "What do the illustrations add to the text?" and discussing their observations with partners.
